Projects

Hackensack Riverkeeper conducts a variety of environmental education programs and events including eco-cruises, sustainable catch and release fishing clinics, and river clean-ups. These events engage and educate Hudson County residents on a variety of topics including the effects of water pollution on the health of human and wildlife populations, sustainable and healthy fishing practices in contaminated waters, and understanding water chemistry.

Hackensack Riverkeeper also performs regular water sampling to evaluate pollution factors which may be influenced by reduced litter, such as bacterial load.

Eco-Cruises

Join us on the River! Eco-cruises are led by Captain Bill Sheehan and Captain Hugh Carola and provide participants with an educational tour of the Hackensack River designed to increase awareness of the river as a vital natural and recreational resource.

Sustainable Fishing Clinics

Learn how to fish! No supplies or prior knowledge necessary. You will also learn about sustainable fishing practices and how to check and interpret fish consumption advisories in effect. A primary goal of these clinics is to teach participants about the health risks of consuming fish from non-approved waters, such as the Hackensack River, which is permanently on the advisory for the foreseeable future given its high pollution levels. These events are completely catch-and release.

River Clean-Ups

Volunteer with us! Hackensack Riverkeeper hosts riverfront clean-ups along the Hackensack River, with experienced program staff leading volunteers in picking up and recycling trash. Help reduce litter in the Hackensack River learn about the impact that litter has on our riverine ecosystems.
