The Hudson County Board of Freeholders honor, commend and applaud Maria Mercurio on her retirement after 25 years of service as the Hudson County Purchasing Agent.

Maria Mercurio was born in Argentina and came to the United States at age 12. She is a true daughter of North Bergen having been raised in North Bergen and is a graduate of North Bergen High School. Maria graduated from Jersey City State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting.

Maria is the daughter of Gennaro Mercurio and stepdaughter of Serveria Mercurio.

Maria began her career in Hudson County government in the Division of Purchasing as an Executive Assistant on October 31, 1994. She performed in this title until 2006 and then was appointed Assistant Purchasing Agent in 2007 where she stayed in this title until 2014.

In 2015, was appointed Qualified Purchasing Agent for a two (2) year period and, in 2017, she was re-appointed as a Qualified Purchasing Agent for a five (5) year period.

Maria has been the “go to” person and problem solver in the Finance Department with her wealth of institutional knowledge. During her years in the Division of Purchasing, every office or Department in the County has, at one time or another, turned to Maria for guidance and expert advice.

Maria was always able to handle all problems with care and attention never ignoring or avoiding in need of assistance, often going above and beyond the call of duty.

Maria’s pride in her North Bergen roots and her Italian heritage is exceeded only by her strong devotion to family and friends.

In the twenty five (25) years Maria has worked in the Division of Purchasing, she has served various Finance Directors ably and professionally.

County Executive and this Board join with the entire County family in honoring and commending Maria Mercurio on her retirement after twenty five (25) years and two (2) months of devoted County service.

Freeholder Chairman Anthony Vainieri, County Executive Thomas A. DeGise and the Hudson County Board of Chosen Freeholders extend its highest commendations to Maria Mercurio for her public service and tireless dedication to the citizens of Hudson County. They also wish her good cheer and good health in the enjoyment of retirement.
