Commissioner Anthony L. Romano, Jr., a proud third-generation Italian-American, was born in Weehawken and raised in Hoboken, New Jersey. A dedicated public servant, Anthony has committed his life to bettering his community through education, law enforcement, and government service.
Anthony’s late father, Anthony Louis “Rocky” Romano, a World War II veteran and Hoboken Police Captain, and his late mother, Mary Virginia Romano, who worked for Stevens Institute of Technology, instilled in him the values of service and perseverance.
After college, Anthony taught Physical Education and History at Hoboken High School for seven years, while also coaching youth sports. He later joined the Hoboken Police Department, serving for 32 years and rising to the rank of Captain. Throughout his career, he specialized in community policing, counterterrorism, and leadership, earning numerous commendations for his service. He serves as a Lector and Eucharistic minister at Saint Lawrence, Saints Peter and Paul, and Saint Francis churches.
Anthony’s passion for education extended beyond the classroom. He was an adjunct professor at St. Peter’s University for a decade, teaching Sociology and Criminal Justice, and an instructor at the Jersey City Police Academy.
In 2009, Anthony was elected Hudson County Commissioner, representing Hoboken and Jersey City Heights. Currently serving as Chairman, he has championed numerous initiatives, including the largest road resurfacing program in Hoboken, park upgrades, and increased safety measures. Anthony is a proponent of ethics reform, green development, and rehabilitation-focused corrections. He has also been instrumental in preserving Hoboken University Medical Center and Christ Hospital.
A lifelong advocate for youth, seniors, and marginalized communities, Anthony has supported programs like Little League, the Hoboken Homeless Shelter, and Vision Zero. His leadership extends to numerous organizations, including the Hudson County Chamber of Commerce, New Jersey Honor Legion, and multiple cultural and civic associations, PBA 600, FOP Lodge 46, and Deputy Director of Public Safety.
Anthony is the proud father of Angel Luis, a graduate of St. Peter’s Prep and St. Peter’s University.
In his free time, Anthony enjoys softball, golfing, running 5K races, and spending time in Florida. His dedication to Hoboken and Hudson County reflects his core values of hard work, kindness, and compassion.
