JERSEY CITY, NJ — On June 5, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy, Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners Anthony L. Romano, East Newark Mayor Dina Grilo, Kearny Mayor Carol Jean Doyle, and Hudson County Director of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development Gina Hulings celebrated the 4th Annual Portugal Day Celebration at the Historic Brennan Court House in honor of Portuguese culture and heritage. Cultural Ambassador Andreia Miguens performed the Portuguese National Anthem, “A Portuguesa.”
“Each year, I am proud to raise the Portuguese flag in honor and celebration of our Portuguese American residents. Hudson County is proud to celebrate National Portuguese Heritage Month and recognize the immense contributions from business owners, educators, and so many others that make up our Hudson County community,” said Hudson County Executive Guy. “Hudson County is proud of the diversity that permeates and enriches our community – especially the endless ways in which the Portuguese American community has positively impacted the County.”
“I’m always proud to see Portugal and Portuguese heritage celebrated here in Hudson County,” said Mayor of East Newark Dina Grilo. “All Portuguese residents in East Newark and all of Hudson County are proud to celebrate their identity as Portuguese Americans, especially during National Portuguese Heritage Month. This is a time where we share with our communities and the world the vibrancy that exists in our households – the expressive music, energetic dances, and delicious food!”
“As Mayor of Kearny, I’m proud to attend Hudson County’s Portugal Day Celebration to recognize the rich values and traditions Portuguese American residents share with us every day,” said Mayor of Kearny Carol Jean Doyle. “I am always thrilled to support Portuguese businesses, organizations, and more throughout the community!”
“As a proud Luso-American, I feel fortunate to live and work in Hudson County – a community that freely recognizes diverse and vibrant communities,” said Gina Hulings, Director of the Hudson County Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs/Tourism Development. “During the Portugal Day Celebration, we come together as community to celebrate the contributions of countless Portuguese American residents that have made resounding impacts on our County as a whole.”
Citations were presented to Councilwoman Marytrine De Castro (1st Ward – Kearny); Councilman Jose Rodrigues (2nd Ward – Kearny); Councilman Fred Esteves (3rd Ward –Kearny); Conceicao Marieiro, Nick Azevedo, and Gil Soares of the Centro Romeu Cascaes Portuguese American Community Center in Harrison; Elizabeth Matos-Cardoso, President of Associação Cultural Portuguesa de Kearny; Jimmy Morejon, President of Associação Cultural Portuguesa (ACP) Riders; Andreia Miguens, Cultural Ambassador; Antonio Cardoso, Director of Rancho Foclorico Sonhos de Portugral; and Katherine Soares, Portuguese American Leadership Council of the U.S.
