JERSEY CITY, NJ — Today, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and the Board of County Commissioners celebrated Juneteenth with an annual flag raising at the Brennan Courthouse. Juneteenth is observed on June 19th throughout the United States as the day enslaved Americans in the South were finally given word of their freedom, signifying the full emancipation of every African American in the U.S.

“Happy and Proud Juneteenth! As a day of immense celebration, Juneteenth reminds every American that we are all free and equal in this country regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or gender,” said Hudson County Executive Guy. “Hudson County memorializes the African American community with today’s flag raising as we honor the plentiful contributions and excellence they have brought to Hudson County’s society and culture. As we celebrate Juneteenth this month, we renew our commitment to uplift and celebrate the African American community within Hudson County each and every day.”

“4th of July freed the land and June 19th, Juneteenth, freed the people,” said Cheryl DB Murphy, Ambassador for the Frederick Douglass Juneteenth Celebration Inc. “Without the colored troops, Buffalo Soldiers there will be no Juneteenth, we must honor our Veterans.”

Citations were given to the following honorees from the Frederick Douglass Juneteenth Celebration Inc.: Mofalc Olei Meinga, President and Board Member, Cheryl DB Murphy, Ambassador, Trustee and Board Member, Darryl Spence, Secretary and Board Member, Charles Blue, Treasurer and Board Member, Kevin G.
