HUDSON COUNTY EXECUTIVE CRAIG GUY TESTIFIES BEFORE
STATE SENATE BUDGET COMMITTEE ON JERSEY CITY’S FISCAL CHALLENGES
County Executive Guy thanks Senate Budget Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo
for recognizing Hudson County’s unified advocacy in support of Jersey City
JERSEY CITY, NJ — On March 30, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy appeared before the New Jersey Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee to advocate for critical support to address Jersey City’s ongoing budget challenges, emphasizing that what happens to Jersey City impacts all of Hudson County and the entire state of New Jersey.
County Executive Guy opened his testimony by expressing gratitude to Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo and all members of the Committee for the opportunity to address them.
“I’d like to thank all of the members of the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee for the work you do as stewards of our state budget. We all know that you have a very difficult job, especially this year. I appreciate the Senate Budget Committee’s role in making vital amendments during the budget process,” said Hudson County Executive Craig Guy. “I am here today proudly representing Hudson County. My plea to you for help is not a Jersey City ask, but rather it is a Hudson County ask and a New Jersey ask.”
“I would also like to thank Governor Mikie Sherrill for her efforts in releasing a responsible budget. While I know we face some tough decisions ahead, I am confident that with our partnership we can deliver for the residents of Jersey City, Hudson County, and New Jersey.”
County Executive Guy underscored the economic significance of Jersey City, noting that the city serves as the backbone of the county’s and state’s growth.
“I’m proud to say that since 2010, Hudson County’s Gross Domestic Product has grown 32%, outpacing the state. That growth is anchored in Jersey City,” Guy said. “Jersey City is our state’s second-largest municipality and still growing. It is the economic engine for Hudson County and our state. What happens in Jersey City really matters to all of us.”
Highlighting the interconnectedness of local and county finances, County Executive Guy warned of the ripple effects that fiscal instability in Jersey City could create.
“Hudson County has a direct stake in Jersey City’s fiscal health. When the city falters, county services, county residents, and county finances feel it. We simply cannot let this happen,” County Executive Guy said.
County Executive Guy also praised Mayor Solomon for his leadership, noting the administration’s transparency and accountability throughout the budgeting process.
“Mayor Solomon has been transparent, decisive, and accountable, and I’m proud to be a partner with Mayor Solomon as we navigate these challenges together,” said Guy.
During the hearing, Chairman Sarlo acknowledged the unified front presented by Hudson County’s leadership and stakeholders, emphasizing the importance of cohesion in securing state support.
Chairman Sarlo noted that Hudson County’s collective advocacy demonstrates a shared commitment to fiscal stability, adding that a fractured county or divided constituencies would only hinder efforts to bring resources back to the region. He also recognized Mayor Solomon’s transparency in addressing the City’s budget situation.
County Executive Guy concluded his remarks by reiterating the urgency of the moment and the shared responsibility to act.
“This is about protecting the economic strength of our region and ensuring stability for our residents,” County Executive Guy said. “We are united in this effort, and we look forward to working collaboratively with the State to find solutions.”
