HUDSON COUNTY EXECUTIVE CRAIG GUY WRITES LETTER CALLING ON THE PORT AUTHORITY OF NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY’S BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS TO INCREASE PATH SERVICE DURING WEEKENDS, WEEKNIGHTS, AND MIDDAY WEEKDAYS
Dear Chairman O’Toole, Executive Director Cotton, and Commissioners:
As Hudson County Executive, I am acutely aware of the role that PATH plays in the daily lives of thousands of our residents. As you know, PATH serves as a vital connection between New Jersey and Manhattan, and I am writing to you regarding critical improvements needed to meet current and future demands.
One of the Port Authority’s key missions is to provide efficient and convenient transportation options for the public. There is no doubt that in recent years, the Port Authority has made commendable investments into improving PATH, including infrastructure upgrades and the integration of new rolling stock. Nonetheless, key stakeholders, other elected officials and I believe PANYNJ should prioritize service improvements in the immediate term.
Currently, PATH runs every 20 to 40 minutes on weekends, weeknights and midday weekdays, despite weekend ridership returning to near pre-pandemic levels. I understand this is due to the PATHForward program, which is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into improving the safety and reliability of the system. That said, this schedule can create unsafe overcrowding on platforms and trains, long wait times, and inconvenience for riders.
I respectfully ask PANYNJ to review current off-peak service levels and identify areas where more frequent train schedules would be possible. Please consider all options, including running extra trains where possible to relieve volume. Once the PATHForward work is complete, PATH should return to previous schedules, with trains running more frequently. This will improve accessibility, encourage ridership, and support economic
activity in the communities served by PATH. Improved frequency would also enhance safety and security by reducing crowding and waiting times on platforms.
Our transportation system needs transformative changes so that residents, commuters, and tourists can move with greater ease; to support our region’s businesses and grow our economy; to meet our region’s climate goals; and to provide a transit alternative for New Jersey residents.
Thank you very much for your attention to these critical matters. If I can provide any further insight, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Craig Guy
Hudson County Executive
