Office of Consumer Affairs

The Hudson County Office of Consumer Affairs protects the public from fraud, deceit, and misrepresentation in the sale of goods and services. We do so by enforcing the Consumer Fraud Act and its regulations within Hudson County and supporting cooperative action within the region as directed by the State Office of Consumer Protection.

Our state-certified staff conducts investigations of complaints initiated by local consumers, at the direction of the state Office of Consumer Protection, or as part of Division-developed investigations focused on topics of continued concern–e.g., price gouging, identity theft, senior fraud, or deceptive sales practices.

Consumers seeking to file a complaint should keep copies of any bills of sale and/or contracts. If there is an ongoing dispute, it is wise to keep good notes of conversations and keep all emails related to a possible complaint.

The Office of Consumer Affairs seeks to work with local businesses in order to get them to comply with state regulations in the swiftest and most constructive fashion possible.

A series of valuable links are listed on the left-hand side of this page under Additional Consumer Protection Resources. Click them to view and download complaint forms, instructions, and brochures.

Office of Consumer Affairs staff is available to conduct consumer education presentations for groups in local community centers, senior centers, and houses of worship. Topics for possible discussion include your rights under state and federal consumer law, senior fraud, identity theft, common homeowner scams, the Alternative Dispute Resolution process, and a general overview of how the Division serves local residents. Printed brochures are provided. And staffers can take individual consumer complaints during a visit. Call the number below to arrange a consumer education session for your local group or organization.

Weights and Measures Units

The Office of Consumer Affairs also is comprised of the Office of Weights and Measures, where officials work to keep the marketplace honest by using highly accurate equipment to inspect scales, meters, scanning equipment, gasoline station pumps, and lumber yards throughout the county.

Weighing or measuring devices are not permitted to be used for commercial purposes unless they are registered with the Office of Weights and Measures. Because of the inspections and investigations conducted by the men and women of Weights and Measures, New Jersey consumers can have confidence when shopping. However, consumers should also pay attention when making purchases. Small, seemingly insignificant errors can add up.
