County Executive Guy joined community members in prayer, lighting the fanous and breaking fast
JERSEY CITY, NJ — On March 18, County Executive Craig Guy, Chairman Anthony Romano of the Board of County Commissioners, and State Senator Raj Mukherji (32nd District) joined together with Diversity & Inclusion Director of the FBI Newark Citizens Academy Alumni Association Hassan Abu Bakr and community members to celebrate Ramadan with a fanous lighting ceremony and iftar courtesy of Dr. Ara Karakashian and the Hudson County Community College Culinary Team.
“The diversity that permeates Hudson County is the lifeblood of our community and I am proud to support our Office of Cultural & Heritage Affairs as they work year-round to recognize and celebrate Hudson County’s communal spirit. Ramadan is a time of sacrifice and a time to refrain from indulging in the things we enjoy. And yet, there is so much to gain during this time as families spend time together praying, meditating, fasting and breaking fast,” said Craig Guy, Hudson County Executive. “Ramadan is a sacred time for Muslims, and I am honored to join together to light this lantern as a symbol that reminds us all that there is a light at the end of the dark tunnel, and that this time of fasting and abstaining lightens our minds and lights up our hearts. Ramadan Mubarak.”
The fanous lighting ceremony and iftar began with Chairman Romano delivering a welcome message followed by remarks delivered by County Executive Guy and Senator Mukherji. Director Abu Bakr led community members in prayer.
