JERSEY CITY, NJ — Today, Hudson County Executive Craig Guy and Bayonne Mayor Jimmy Davis announced a series of creative plans to bolster road safety in the City of Bayonne. These initiatives came about as a result of Hudson County’s landmark Vision Zero Action Plan, which aims to reduce all deaths and serious injuries on County roadways. The Vision Zero Action Plan was built collaboratively, with input from each of Hudson County’s 12 municipalities, including Bayonne. County Executive Guy and Mayor Davis announced the following Bayonne-specific road safety projects:
- Broadway Safety Project: The County has applied for major Local Safety funding for Broadway and will learn about the award by next year. Improvements to Broadway will include signal upgrades with compliant pedestrian countdown heads, as well as new ADA-compliant ramps, bump outs, rumble strips, and restriping on Broadway from 16th Street to 44th Street.
- Safer Connection to the Bikeway on the Bayonne Bridge: Hudson County will partner with the City of Bayonne to apply for a Transportation Alternatives Program grant to construct a safe pedestrian and bike connection along JFK Boulevard to the Bayonne Bridge pathway.
- Connection to the Morris Canal Greenway: Hudson County received a grant from the Transportation Alternatives Program to design and construct a portion of the regional Morris Canal Greenway that runs through Mercer Park in Bayonne. The estimated construction completion of the Greenway section in Mercer Park is the end of 2026. It will connect to the proposed bike lane on JFK Boulevard from Mercer Park in Bayonne to Custer Avenue in Jersey City and make a vital connection of the Greenway into Jersey City.
- Safe Routes for All Grant (SS4A): Partnering with Hudson County, the city of Bayonne received $25,000 to complete an ADA accessibility audit of local roads.
“Partnering with municipalities is the best way to provide services and opportunities for Hudson County residents,” said Hudson County Executive Craig Guy. “Mayor Jimmy Davis has made it his goal to provide safer streets for Bayonne, whether you’re a motorist, cyclist, or pedestrian. When we work together, we get things done, and every day I’m proud to work with Mayor Davis to get things done for Bayonne and Hudson County.”
Recently, Hudson County has taken on several resurfacing projects on JFK Boulevard in Bayonne. In 2022, JFK Boulevard was repaved from 5th to 18th Streets, and in 2023 JFK Boulevard was repaved between Communipaw Avenue and Sip Avenue.
“Bayonne residents deserve to be secure on our roads. We must invest in projects that will help keep our communities safe. I will continue working with County Executive Craig Guy and his administration to improve Bayonne’s infrastructure through Vision Zero,” said Mayor of Bayonne, Jimmy Davis.
Launched in January 2025, the Vision Zero Action Plan set a Target Year of 2034 to eliminate all fatalities and injuries on County roads. For more information on the Vision Zero Action Plan, visit our website.
