APPLICANT INVESTIGATIONS UNIT

What We Do

The Applicant Investigations Unit (AIU) is responsible for managing the applicant screening and background investigation process for County Correctional Police Officer candidates. We coordinate every phase from application intake through background checks, psychological and medical evaluations, and final academy clearance.

Our mission is to ensure all applicants meet the standards of integrity, reliability, and fitness for duty required by the Hudson County Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Disqualifiers

Applicants may be disqualified at any point during the hiring process for reasons including, but not limited to:

  • Felony convictions
  • Criminal history, including arrests that were dismissed or expunged
  • Juvenile records that raise concerns about character or conduct
  • History of Domestic Violence, whether criminal or civil
  • Poor employment history, including terminations or falsified work experience
  • Unacceptable driver record, such as multiple moving violations or suspensions
  • No valid New Jersey driver’s license
  • Not being a U.S. citizen (either natural-born or naturalized)

Phases of the Hiring Process

Phase 1: Application Submission
Submit your application online. You will be required to provide personal and identifying information, and confirm your eligibility.

Phase 2: Criminal History Check
All applications are screened through state and national criminal databases, including domestic violence registries, and firearms checks.

Phase 3: Physical Fitness Assessment
Qualified applicants will complete a physical test consisting of:

  • Vertical Jump – Minimum 12.5 inches
  • Sit-Ups – Minimum 22 in 1 minute
  • 300-Meter Run – 84 seconds or less
  • Push-Ups – Minimum 19 in 1 minute
  • 1.5-Mile Run – Must be completed in 19 minutes or less
Phase 4: Personal History Statement & Document Collection
Applicants who pass the physical exam will complete the Personal History Statement “blue book” and be scheduled for fingerprinting.

Phase 5: Background Investigation
This phase includes home visits, employment and reference checks, and verification of residency and police records.

Phase 6: Psychological, Medical & Stress Testing
Applicants recommended to proceed will be scheduled for these evaluations.

Phase 7: Final Academy Physical Assessment
Conducted by the training academy to confirm fitness for entry.

Phase 8: Conditional Offer & Academy Preparation
Candidates who pass all prior phases will receive a conditional offer and academy onboarding information.

Minimum Requirements 

  • At least 18 years old
  • U.S. citizen (natural-born or naturalized)
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Valid New Jersey driver’s license
  • Ability to pass all phases of the hiring process
