CORRECTIONAL OFFICER

RESPONSIBILITIES
A Correction Officer under supervision during an assigned tour of duty within an adult county correctional facility, or institution, performs a wide variety of tasks in support of the safety, security and welfare of inmates, facility personnel and visitors; does other related duties as required.

Correction Officer Maximum Salary – $129,905

REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: High school diploma or its equivalent. Candidates must read and write English sufficiently to perform duties of the position;
  • 18 years or older;
  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the State of New Jersey. Additionally, institutions located in certain municipalities have residency requirements, which require candidates to provide proof of such residency beginning six months prior to the closing date of written examination for the position;
  • License: Candidates will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license.
  • Candidates for this position must be eligible to possess a firearm in accordance with State and Federal laws;
  • Background: Investigation of candidates’ employment history, driving history, domestic violence history, and criminal history are conducted; and
  • Medical: Candidates will be given a thorough medical and psychological examination. They must provide urine samples for analysis to determine drug use.
  • Ability to pass the following Examinations: Minimum Physical Performance Test Assessment,  Correctional Police Officer Training, Academy Literacy Proficiency Assessment

Salary, Benefits, and Schedule

1. What is the starting salary and am I paid while in the academy?
The starting salary is $53,429. YES. The starting salary is competitive for New Jersey law enforcement, and recruits receive full pay and benefits during the academy. Officers also receive scheduled salary increases.

2. Are there opportunities for overtime?
Yes. The facility operates twenty-four hours a day, and officers are eligible for overtime.

3. What benefits do officers receive?
Officers receive medical, dental, vision, prescription coverage, paid time off, and enrollment in the New Jersey Police and Firemen’s Retirement System.

Eligibility

1. What are the minimum requirements to apply?
Applicants must be at least eighteen, possess a high school diploma or GED, have a valid driver’s license, and meet all background, medical, and psychological standards.

2. Can prior arrests, convictions, drug use, or a DUI affect my application?
Yes. Serious criminal history or recent drug use may disqualify you. All background issues are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must be fully disclosed.

2. How long does the hiring process take?
Most applicants complete the process within three to six months, depending on academy scheduling and background results.

Training and Probation

1. How long is the academy, and what training will I receive?
The Basic Correctional Police Officer Academy lasts approximately nineteen weeks and includes defensive tactics, legal standards, emergency response, report writing, communication skills, and firearms qualification.

2. Is there a probationary period?
Yes. The probationary period is 1 year from the date of appointment.

Career and Work Environment

1. What does a Correctional Police Officer do?
Officers supervise inmates, maintain safety and security, conduct searches, manage inmate movement, respond to emergencies, and support orderly operations inside the facility.

2. What advancement opportunities exist?
Officers may pursue promotion to supervisory ranks or apply for specialized units, including the Special Operations, Transportation, Training, and other assignments.
