Environmental Planning
Environmental Planning is an interdisciplinary component of planning which focuses on the cross-sections between development, sustainability, nature, and the lived experience. The Hudson County Division of Planning is placing renewed emphasis on topics like sustainability and resiliency in the face of changing climates and increased pollution. Typical concerns addressed through environmental planning include improving air quality, improving water quality, stormwater management, flood mitigation, prioritizing nature-based spaces for residents to enjoy, and building resiliency throughout the county to ensure rapid recovery from adverse climate events.
Public education is another big component of environmental planning. One annual event we participate in is Earth Day. At the 2023 Earth Day events hosted by the Hudson County Improvement Authority (HCIA) our staff met with many residents, sharing information about our work and the passing out eco-friendly activities including seed packets of native flowers and vegetables, and soy-based crayons and coloring sheets for kids.
As an integral initiative of the Environmental Justice (EJ) program, we are eager to introduce Clean Hudson, a multifaceted collaborative effort between a non-profit entity, esteemed higher education institution, and local government agencies.
